Content: W.T.L Dear sir I beg to acknowlede the the reciept of your letters of 9th and 25th October also 5th and 26 to November also you letters of 5th december which I recieved her on the 31st of January In your letter of 5th November you mention offering a post on the east Nelson in the Hay River I am afraid it would be a bit of a trouble getting an outfit into that part of the country as the country is very rough from here out The traders have a post on Hay River and have been their for some time. They take their outfit in by way of Wolverine Point which is much nicer then this way. But the late Trader Burbanks used to trade about 85 miles North of here on the Head water of the North Pine River which I think would be a good place for a winter Post as I think it would be the means of getting some of the Nelson Indians to Trade their. The only means of geting an outfit their would be by pack train and dogs in winter If I could get a hold of some trustworthy halfbreed to take a small outfit out their next fall and stay their for the winter we could get a lot of furs as quite a number of the Nelson Indians hunt in that part of the country Their is very few Trappers on the South Pine River this winter but the few that is their is doing well I hear that Revillion Brothers is going to establish a post at forks of the South Pine if the Railway goes through the Pine Pass it will certainly be a good place if the railway comes that way it is about 60 or 70 miles from here J Kerr I know this man well he was at H Hope in G Kennedy's time about 20 years ago but I know he was a hard man to get along with then he used to have a bad habit of quarelling with the indians he is married to a women from the old country which will be an exta offense as they will not live so closely as natives of the country Balance shett with fur letters of 5th December I was glad to see by the balance shett the result of last year in fact they are better then I thought and I hope it will be as good this year Opposition is very strong here this winter they dont seem to care what they pay for furs as long as they get it It has been a severe winter here and lots of snow which has made it very hard for the indians trapping very little fur was killed closing the months of January + February but the weather seem to be getting a little milder now and I expect they will make a good catch during next month. quite a number of the indians wintering out towards Nelson I have not hard from them yet but expect some of them in next month I certainly hope they have made a good hunt as they in the best part of the country for hunting. Mr Bateson I think will be going out in spring as he does not seem to be in very good health the cold weather does seem to agree with him here outside of office work he very very lethargic I don't think he will make even a H.B man for this part of the country.
